I would be lying if I said I the thought of traveling solo wasn’t daunting at first. When people ask who I’ll be traveling with I casually say I’m going alone as if it’s the most natural thing in the world – but it’s not.
I used to feel that experiences could not be enjoyed as much if I didn’t have someone to share it with. In fact, my first instinct when I see or experience anything of note is to show or tell someone close to me. But I have recently realised that you don’t need to share something in order to enjoy it – you might even appreciate it more.
Five Reasons You Should Travel Alone:
1. You Will Have the Freedom to Do Whatever You Like
Your days are exactly that – yours. You don’t have to go around sights and attractions just because they are on someone else’s list. You are free to spend your trip exactly how you want to spend it and you don’t have to explain or justify your choices. If you want to spend 2 hours trying every flavour at a fudge stall at the local market, you can. There is no pressure to hurry up or to make the trip appealing to everyone. It can be whatever you want it to be.
2. You Will Get to Know Yourself
You will really get to know yourself. After realising that I was free to do whatever I wanted, it occurred to me that I had no idea what I wanted to do or what kind of activities I enjoyed. I had spent every trip I’d ever been on planning activities around the preferences of whoever I was with. I had never ever asked myself what I would choose to do. Travelling alone forces you to think about what makes you tick.
3. You Will Meet More People
You are far more likely to meet people on your travels if you are alone. Whether you travel with a friend, family member or significant other, it is always far too easy to fall into the comfort of just talking to them. If you are travelling solo it forces you out of your comfort zone and you will talk to and meet so many more interesting people! Isn’t that what traveling is all about?
4. You Will Have a Chance to Escape
Bringing somebody from home can be great fun, but if you are looking for a real escape then traveling alone could be just the ticket. It’s human nature to talk about what is going on in our lives, so if you travel with anybody from home you are bound to end up talking about home. Not having those conversations or reminders will give you the opportunity to properly escape from the daily grind and immerse yourself in what is around you.
5. You Will Notice More
Being able to truly soak in the world around us is a luxury we don’t often have. There is always something needing done or figured out or somebody to talk to or something that needs attention. With absolutely no distractions you will be able to notice all the little things that make life special. Whether it’s the freshness of the air around you, the mystery ingredient in your meal that makes it taste extra delicious, the cute couple who are so in love at the next table, or even just the calmness of not having to entertain anyone but yourself. These minute details are so often overlooked because of our busy lives. Traveling alone allows you to take a beat and notice them all.
So why not give it a go? Plan a trip just for you and see the difference a little ‘me time’ can make.
